ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses fundamental elements of practice that are crucial to have in place, or have understanding of, at the beginning of the final school placement. Key policies are explored with a particular emphasis on the trainee teacher translating the behaviour policy into practical use in the classroom with an emphasis on understanding how to develop a shared understanding of classroom rules with the children. Understanding the link between behaviour and learning and knowing the importance of language when managing behaviour are also addressed.

The chapter highlights the importance of sound subject and pedagogical knowledge as well as understanding the need for trainee teachers to get involved with progress data early on in the final school placement. Knowing and understanding the special needs of some children is also addressed with some key pedagogical considerations for teaching and learning. Key pedagogical choices for children for whom English is an additional language is also addressed.
