ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 highlights the importance of the trainee teacher knowing the children in their final placement class as individuals and as learners. Examples are provided with regards to what the trainee teacher should be looking for when observing children at the beginning of the final placement so that they can think about strategies to help engage children in their learning.

Using data and assessment tools in the final placement is addressed, highlighting the understanding and the use of data. Assessment for learning is presented in a practical way, demonstrating how it should be embedded in the planning process; making the language of learning the core of all teaching.

Different ways in which progress of learning can be evidenced are presented, such as trainee teachers annotating evidence or using film to allow children to self-reflect on progress. Finally the need to understand and develop the language of report writing to parents/carers is addressed.
