ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the empirical analysis of the case, analyzing processes of collective identity emergence and negotiation, along with recruitment strategies and forms of organization. Taken together, the material presented indicate a variety of strategies employed by a wide range of actors in the traditionalist and the LGBTIQ movements. By tearing apart both movements, the analysis aims at helping the reader understand the complex dynamics through which collective identities have been negotiated along the period of the mobilization, such as processes of social appropriation, centralization and institutionalization, but also fractionalization and radicalization. Most importantly, I also focus on intra-movement interactions; namely, competition processes between different factions of the movements at multiple levels. These findings contribute to elucidate the heterogeneous nature of both movements, not only by pointing to the variety of actors, but also their positions, choices and decisions within the movement. Based on the conceptual framework of the book, the chapter explains the interactions between the two movements by looking at different dilemmas the actors were facing when strategizing against each other, namely organization and extension.
