ABSTRACT

Idealist technocrats view democracy as the pinnacle of peace and human prosperity, freedom and equality under neoliberal ideology and political discourses and believe that democracy is integral to maintaining a durable peace, political stability and economic growth. From a traditional perspective, democracy is defined as a government in which citizens govern themselves. Schumpeter refers to “institutional arrangements for arriving at political decisions, which realize a common good by making people itself decide issues through the election of individuals who are to assemble to carry out its will.” Idealists believe that democracy is a fire extinguisher of war among democratic states and that a widespread democracy boosts a higher level of peace and political stability in illiberal nations. It is believed that peace and prosperity would be durable if it were born from a democratic process. Political leaders and citizens have adopted democratic systems from Southeast Asia, Europe and Eastern Europe, Central America and Africa.
