ABSTRACT

The growing importance of health and safety linked with increased awareness of serious incidents arising from greater scrutiny of recent incidents has led to regulators, shareholders, the public, and other stakeholders questioning the role of the board of directors in ensuring that these risks are being managed effectively. It is generally expected of larger organizations that they should play an active role in setting standards for health and safety, and, as with other systems and practices, should set the standard for small organizations to follow. With leadership at the top of an organization and by balancing the management of these different types of risks, the leadership teams can drive their organizations to achieve high reliability. The management framework is an excellent way to bring all the various facets of leadership and governance together to better manage health and safety from both a strategic and tactical manner.
