ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at the strategic and business planning and how they integrate with health and safety. Value chains can be used to illustrate how Health & Safety management gateways can be adopted by the management team. The procurement of members of the supply chain has a pivotal health and safety role and so it has been included among the primary activities. An important point to note is that there can be many value chains that serve the main set of operations including those belonging to the members of the supply chain. The sequence of stages to be followed by a member of the supply chain might be scheme design, detailed design, off-site manufacture, inbound logistics, and operations. Operations generally involve the largest number of activities going on, and the largest amount of people at any one time compared to the earlier steps in value chains.
