ABSTRACT

This chapter provides guidance through six steps to approach the management of health and safety in a pragmatic and manageable way, in which they can stand at some good distance from the operations, yet be informed effectively on the performance of the organization against established targets and plans. Health and safety must be managed as part of the business planning of an organization and managers, need to be able to do this as part of their effective management of performance. The guiding principle is to respond to questions that are raised to provide confirmation or otherwise that the agreed policies included in the documented management systems are being applied. An informed Top Management is informative to categorize the various requirements placed on Top Managers. The Top Manager should also reflect on the brief that has been handed down to the executive directors or operations managers that has come from the board.
