ABSTRACT

Barbara Evans is a single black woman with three small children. She is twenty-seven years old but looks much younger. Barbara's three children, all girls, are two, three, and seven. Interviewed at a homeless shelter in Chicago, Barbara recounts the years of physical and emotional violence inflicted by Thomas, the father of her two youngest girls. Barbara and her children escaped from Thomas's virtual imprisonment and have been at the shelter for two months. They hope that Thomas does not find them and that permanent housing will be available soon.
