ABSTRACT

The Lithuanian Restructuring Movement is an independent citizens’ movement which supports and deepens the restructuring of socialist society on a democratic and humanitarian basis initiated under the leadership of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The Movement was born as a citizens’ initiative expressing the moral and national rebirth of society. In adopting the special resolution on “Interethnic Relations,” the 19th All-Union Party Conference opened up a new era during the restructuring period in the development of national relations, and in the area of theoretical and practical substantiation of nationality policy. Decisions made at the conference contributed to the democratization of interethnic relations in the republic, and the strengthening of national consciousness among the Lithuanian nation and national groups residing within the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic. Thanks to efforts by Party Organs and the public, many of the Lithuanian national treasures and historically symbolic objects, which have been undeservedly forgotten in the past, have been returned to public life.
