ABSTRACT

“Kaibutsu-sensei” is the title of a comic strip in Shukan Manga Times, one of the many erotic comic books in Japan. This chapter examines ero manga as a form of popular culture targeted to males. Cartoon artistry is an expressive format that combines stylized and simplistic imagery with a laconic text. As a style of communication it is hardly unique, of course, to Japan. What is distinctive, however, is the degree to which manga has spread and diversified as a dominant medium in mass culture. At the end of sexual encounters, women are typically abandoned by their violators. These men have used and abused their bodies and often left them with irreparable scars: a visible stab wound in the abdomen a searing memory of a terrible rape a soiled reputation. The ero manga’s respectable profits are due to a very unrespectable kind of storytelling.
