ABSTRACT

In the contemporary period, the mass media, radio, and press have become generally available and their public is increasing. Before the contemporary period and even continuing into the 1950s, most of the population spurned the schools. In the contemporary period, the tribe is the most important social political group in Al-Karak, but, relatively, it has lost power to new or changed groups in the area. Socio-economic stratification has taken on much more political meaning in the contemporary period than previously. The major leaders of the various tribes kept up a measure of contact with each other, but in the contemporary period this has become more extensive and intensive, continually crossing the vertical groups of society. The structure of the whole political society in Al-Karak has altered with the changes in its structural groups and the addition of new ones, Some new socio-political relationships have been formed, while older ones have either adjusted to new conditions or remained essentially the same.
