ABSTRACT

Two nations which we shall call Atlantica and Southland are on opposite sides of a large ocean. However, they both claim a certain group of islands. These islands are actually in the vicinity of Southland, which has a strong historical claim to them; however, the islands are currently under the jurisdiction of Atlantica, which has administered them throughout the present century. Various forms of the send-the-marines matrix were presented to subjects. However, these were always presented in abstract form, never with any particular content or title associated. In the prediscussion series of the send-the-marines matrix, most subjects, unsurprisingly, came together at the natural outcome. When discussion and the possibility of negotiated agreements were added, no pairs failed to reach agreements and the most frequent results moved from the natural outcome to the Pareto-optimal frontier.
