ABSTRACT

This chapter goes to several developments of significance for the future of private foreign Agency for International Development are unfolding. Grantmaking International is designed to be a small, autonomous association of foundations, corporations, church bodies, and perhaps other private funders. A number of private voluntary organizations participated in the organizing and carrying out of an international development conference held in Washington in May 1981. The discussions dealt with varying approaches to private philanthropy in the Western Hemisphere and the needs for increased funding of development programs. The proposed major new thrust of the Reagan administration in the development field has to do with the search for an increased role for American business firms. Partners of the Americas, ten years old in 1981, has launched a special project for training community leaders in both the United States and various Latin American countries to help build support for development projects.
