ABSTRACT

Surpluses or deficits are viewed in physical and nutritional terms and analyzed with respect to probable effects on worldwide malnutrition. The general approach employed by Food and Agricultural Organization involved trend-oriented projections made independently for both production and demand. The latest food projections by the United States Department of Agriculture were presented in the 1974 publication, The World Food Situation and Prospects to 1985. The low alternative utilized those input estimates judged likely to be attainable by the 1985 projection date under almost any eventuality. Per-capita demand for each commodity in each country was applied to the UN population projections to determine total demand. The UN medium projection, as determined in 1968 and updated in early 1971, was used for most countries in the 1971 study, where demand projected by country was given for 36 commodities for the years 1970, 1975, and 1980.
