ABSTRACT

This chapter explores recommendations for increasing public input into planning. The results of the survey can be used to determine the extent to which citizens are informed about, and wish to become involved in the Niagara Frontier's "208" planning project. Recommendations for increasing citizen input into environmental planning should include strategies for the dissemination of information effectively. The dissemination of information is one of the most important functions of public meetings. This information, when provided at an early stage of the planning process, can help increase public awareness and help special interest group members to understand better the problems of the planning endeavor. Several scholars recommend the use of task forces for the purpose of increasing public input into environmental planning. Timothy O'Riordan's and Jon O'Riordan's idea of the role task forces should play in environmental planning is similar; to try to reduce friction, and foster understanding and cooperation among interests.
