ABSTRACT

In addition to the aggregate figures derived from the survey questionnaire, an attempt was also made to ascertain characteristics of the leading secondary school Rebels at both school level and citywide in Guangzhou. Southern Guangzhou, with its large factories and rather recently established neighborhood junior high schools, became the major source of strength of both the East Wind faction and the Doctrine Guards. Every indication is that the large majority of Doctrine Guard leaders, particularly in the earlier part of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, were also Young Communist League (YCL) members. The Doctrine Guards occupied a different position within the East Wind faction than did the middle school Rebels in the Flag faction. The establishment of the Red Guards in August made the YCL superfluous but, rather than ending the debate on the League; it seemed to lead instead to an increased focus on the revisionist membership policy and character of that organization.
