ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the interpretation of the model by introducing family and community information collected in the village-level case studies. The significance of the coefficient for nonfarm jobs and opportunities is in sharp contrast to the nonsignificant and opposite sign of the coefficient for supplemental farm opportunities. A different set of priorities is reflected by the families living in two communities located in a municipality with a similarly low level of development of the social and economic infrastructure but much lower degrees of commercialization of agriculture. The low level and efficacy of development program activities in two of the high-migration communities provides a strong counterpoint to the success story of the Paoay Lake communities. The pattern of educational attainment in the communities matches the aspirations and relative expense of sending children to school.
