ABSTRACT
Mass emigration in the niaeteeBth century was an innovation, or a dynamically continuous new behavior, which diffused among communities. An explanation of emigration should specify “social, economic, locational and institutional” contexts most likely to have subgroups or niches within which emigration diffuses (Brown, 1981:239). This chapter will propose a theoretical framework to substantiate this claim and guide the development of research hypotheses.
