ABSTRACT

Emigration assumed mass proportions from Sweden between 1865 and 1910. The first surges in emigration came after the famine of 1867, and by the time of the first World War an epoch of mass emigration had ended. Close to 20% of the male cohorts born in the period 1861-1875 were lost through emigration during the massive outflows of the 1880s and early 1890s. Female cohorts born during the same period were decimated nearly 16% through emigration losses. Cohorts born in the 1890s lost fewer of their numbers to emigration: some 9% of males and 5% of females were lost in the emigrant stream (Hofsten and Lundstrom, 1976).
