ABSTRACT

Radio listening represents an important leisure alternative on Sundays. Even though Sunday is the preferred day for diversions outside the house, many people, especially Tabascans, stay at home and enjoy listening to the radio. In communication research it is commonly argued that when a new technology is introduced to a different setting, what is transferred is not only the technology itself, but also set of assumptions and practices regarding the particular technology and its use. Since Radio Margaritas' music has enabled the creation of variety of social uses of radio related to music, it is not surprising that interviewees spoke of this programing. With the exception of one Maderan woman, all Maderans spoke of one or several topics on music; by contrast only about two-thirds of Tabascans did so. Besides playing for religious pilgrimages, holidays, and other important occasions, Tabascan and Maderan musicians used to get together every week, usually on Saturday afternoon, and play for their families and neighbors.
