ABSTRACT

Intravillage flows involve the interpersonal communication taking place through the closed social networks of family and friends, as well as through the ejidatarios network. Changes in external flows may have had a democratizing effect too. The broadcasting in Tojolabal has introduced an alternative source of social knowledge for women, who have been geographically isolated in their villages and have been excluded from the ejidatarios networks of their own villages. It is not difficult to see that Tabascans and Maderans have indeed appropriated radio to improve intervillage information flows and that Radio Margaritas has greatly contributed to this. But there is an apparent contradiction between these last remarks and the station's failure to produce news programs that are truly relevant to Tojolabal villages. As one of the most immediate forms of people's participation, audience visits to Radio Margaritas' facilities uncover patterns of participation and uses.
