ABSTRACT
DURING MY YEARS in the Soviet Union the life of the military remained a mystery to me. For security reasons members of the army, navy, and air force live in isolation and are not permitted to have personal contact with foreigners. I had spoken with the sons of friends who had served their hard, two-year obligation in the army, but I had never met officers and their families.
