ABSTRACT

The impressive array of new technologies presented in the last chapter points to the potential for a radical decline in Japan's beef production cost. Furthermore, now that problems in production of other livestock and poultry as well as crops have essentially been solved, it is only natural that governmental efforts be redirected to place more emphasis on beef production. Some areas now receiving greater attention include roughage source development, storage, feeding methods, and national breed development and selection programs. The purpose of this chapter is to measure the potential for (1) productivity enhancement (a physical concept), and (2) cost reduction (an efficiency concept) from various technology adoption and industry structure change scenarios.
