ABSTRACT
Appropriate Technology has evolved in two streams: in the North and in the South. A trend appears to be emerging where the two streams of Appropriate Technology are converging - or, at least, the areas of common interest and activity are becoming more apparent and well organized. Work by the International Labour Office and the United Nations Advisory Committee on Science and Technology for Development has revealed how the artful combination of emerging modern technologies with traditional techniques may enhance prospects for success in local economic development. There are a number of important things to recognize about Appropriate Technology International, besides that fact that it is a tangible expression of the international scope of the Appropriate Technology movement. The diversity of the Appropriate Technology movement is complicated by the fact that much of its literature uses inconsistent terminology or unusual jargon, or consists of mixtures of partly incongruous views.
