ABSTRACT

The mortality rate for each age group is determined by the life expectancy and a model life table. Life expectancy indicates the average number of years of life expected for a newborn baby at the prevailing mortality rates. The model life table indicates the mortality rate for each age group that results in the given life expectancy. The number of births was calculated by using the total fertility rate, the age distribution of fertility and the number of women in the reproductive ages. The total fertility rate for any period is the number of children that would be born to a woman during her lifetime if she followed the average childbearing rates for that period. Data on income distribution are not easily obtained and are in fact available for only sixty-six countries in the world. The estimate of the population with incomes below the poverty line was based on income per capita, the distribution of income and the poverty line.
