ABSTRACT

In the mid-fifties American foreign policy became increasingly global—and thus too CIA intelligence operations. The growing power and influence of the Soviet Union, the emergence of China on the world scene, the rising tide of revolutionary action, the increasing force of the Left in the third world as well as in Europe became objects of immediate concern in Washington. Several CIA agents in excellent positions on the Arab side did in fact report in concrete detail the Arab intention to attack the Israelis and, as the crisis intensified, specified the approximate time of the attack. These were only isolated reports, however, in the vast amount of information coming into Washington from all sources. The crown of intelligence reporting in Washington for many years has been to get a scoop on a coup. In the mid- and late sixties two fresh targets joined the list of CIA priorities: international drug traffic and political terrorism.
