The Size of Compensating Wage Differentials and an Application

In this Chapter the results of statistical analysis of wage differentials between urban areas are reported. Despite the use of different definitions of "wages" and the use of different samples of the population, a common conclusion results: each order of magnitude (factor of ten) increase in population size is associated with an increase in wages by approximately 10 percent.
