ABSTRACT

In a chapter on alternatives to orthodox merchandise exports there must be room for a section dealing with unorthodox merchandise exports. Under given circumstances it may be more profitable for an individual manufacturer – and the country's Balance of Payments– to promote internal exports rather than attempt to sell merchandise abroad through commercial channels. Apart from the governmental and institutional donations, referred to in the section on benefactions, personal gifts are received from abroad by some fortunate residents in the world's weaker economies. 'The consensus among the business, finance and government leaders is that the best way to redress the trade deficit problem is to stimulate exports rather than restrict imports. Equity and intellectual honesty demand that only those who are prepared to slap down the export zealots shall be deemed to have clean hands and entitled to campaign for unrestricted imports. The economic assistance rendered by permanent emigrants to their country of birth is often only provisional.
