ABSTRACT
The son of an accountant, Clyfford Still grew up in Spokane, Washington, and Bow Island, a small town in Alberta, Canada. Encouraged to draw as a small boy, he taught himself to paint as he grew older. His parents introduced him to music and literature and gave him the means to accumulate a sizable array of art books and magazines. Still made his first visit to New York in 1925. Twenty-one years old, a native of the Far West, he expected to find the city a place of happy fulfillments.
