ABSTRACT

There was a very popular hit in the beginning of the 1940s, the words of which soon became a favorite of the romantically inclined: On a moonlit night, what does a girl dream about? That perhaps there comes a young prince on a sparkling white horse. In this age of privacy, alienation, and isolation, it is especially difficult for those who attain higher training and education to meet people who can be considered prospective mates. In the cities, moreover, the ratio is even more lopsided—in Budapest for example there are 16.5 percent more women than men. Finally, usually only the least educated and the least trained women desire to remain in the village. Hence, many women get married for a little corner to call their own, or for many other reasons of social and material advantages, and not because of dedication and love to another person and hopes for a mutually fulfilling life together.
