ABSTRACT

The Socialist of Motul, once a member of the Central Committee of C.R.O.M., forced the union to affiliate with the League. The amount of land parcelled out by the Socialist of Motul was considerable. If, up to the time of his death, land distribution figures were added to earlier statistics, Yucatan, of all Mexican states, ranked second only to Morelos in the number of hectares reapportioned under the Revolution. As a state and national congressional representative, as president of the Socialist Party and the League, he commanded widespread influence, respected by most of the general populace and feared by the elite. The Liberal Party in the Peninsula had resorted to some desperate measures in 1920 and 1921, such as sending fake telegrams and organizing bogus political parties to try to confuse the Socialists. The Socialist publication, Tierra, whether weekly or monthly, reached many organized urban workers and was distributed widely in the countryside.
