ABSTRACT

This chapter examines urbanization, large cities, density, projected population, and border city growth and change. Urbanization includes the levels of urbanization throughout the twentieth century and the change in urbanization in the latter half of the century. There is a special section on the 59 largest Mexican cities, i.e., metropolitan areas above 100,000 population. This section also examines change in city populations during the decade of the 80s. Population density of Mexico City also is examined. A population projection of Mexico City to year 2010, encompassing the larger conurbation, is presented and discussed. Finally, the population of the Mexican border cities is examined, including twin cities facing each other across the U.S.-Mexican border. This reveals substantial growth in the population of border cities during the 1980s.
