ABSTRACT
The MFO 1s the first effective large-scale multinational peacekeeping operation (the Arab force in Lebanon not qualifying as such) set up Independently of the framework of the UN or another international organization such as the OAS or the Arab League. As such, 1t presents an alternative for maintaining security in those areas or situations where the power politics in the UN effectively prevent UN participation in maintaining the peace.
