ABSTRACT

Pedro Cieza de Leon, who published his history in 1553 wrote, The Hubinas and Chiquiguanitas and Quimistacas and Collaguas are among the tribes under the authority of this city, who were once very numerous and owned great herds of llamas. More direct evidence is presented by the Franciscan missionaries of the upper Colca Valley. In 1585 a series of Peruvian documents was sent to the General of the Order, Gonzaga, to be used for his "De origine ordinis Seraphici." The earliest comprehensive list of the repartimientos of the Collaguas with the number of tributaries given was prepared under the orders of Pedro de la Gasca at the end of the Gonzalo Pizarro rebellion. La Gasca's reports encompassed all of Peru and were organized district by district. The Franciscan report suggests a larger population of the Collaguas than would be expected with approximately four thousand tributaries.
