ABSTRACT

The continuous political importance of Polish student theater is similarly a consequence of the fact of the close resemblance of the world of theater to the non-theatrical world. The relationship between the official conception of the workings of society and the actual, nature of everyday life is quite similar to the relationship between theater as an art form and the theatricality of the "real" social world. As an art form, theater can be understood as a separate social institution. Many contemporary theater groups attempt to transform theater as art, which emerged historically when audience was separated from performance, into theater as a ritual where the barrier between audience and performance is eliminated. The symbolic density of theater as an art form makes possible the expression of the otherwise un-expressible. The material of theater is composed sociality, and social life is saturated with dramaturgic aspects.
