ABSTRACT

By walking the line between the heavy demands of activism and the threat of burnout, they are able to maintain their commitment to a vision of social change in which peace and more equitable sharing of resources are crucial goals. Activism provides many opportunities for taking risks, by participating in demonstrations, being arrested, speaking in front of groups, writing unpopular tracts, or simply standing out from the crowd. Peace activism provides frequent opportunities for communication—speaking before groups and at rallies, defending the peace vision in public debates, writing about peace and social justice issues for newspapers and newsletters. Working side by side with so many different kinds of people gave the activists a clearer picture of a multi-cultural future, where people of various backgrounds would live in harmony without the social distinctions which currently separate them. Numerous persisters discussed changes in their emotional tendencies as a consequence of their peace activism.
