ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on two of the principal challenges facing the Radical government: an accord with the unions and the ever-present threat of a military coup. It examines Argentina's economic stagnation and political instability in the light of the changes occurring in the relations of force among the different social classes. The book analyzes Argentina's contemporary history by focusing on particular moments when conflicts emerging from the main power struggles reached a state of crystallization. It considers the economic and political consequences of the policies of industrialization implemented during the 1960s. The book traces the development of the political crisis and the responses of the various governments in Argentina. It also examines the economic policy of the government of the Radical party, which was democratically elected in 1983.
