ABSTRACT

Political activism by black youth and workers matures steadily as the state implements new repressive measures. Since the 1976 Soweto rebellion, black student, church and worker organizations have intensified their political activity at an unprecedented rate. The South African state has reacted to mass radicalization with a dual program of reform and repression. The ruling National Party has responded to the growing strength of African nationalism in the region by intensifying its military build-up. The trajectories of African nationalism and the apartheid state are on a direct collision course. Black South Africans have demonstrated a willingness to sacrifice life and limb in their struggle against apartheid. The US government and US corporations are deeply involved in the cockpit of conflict. In addition to the easily quantifiable ties, there are other connections which deserve mention. Afro-Americans have steadily increased their opposition to the status quo in South Africa.
