ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on terrorist events. It describes the general characteristics of these violent events: when and where they occurred, which groups committed them and who the victims were. The chapter explains the causes of the events. It explores the extent to which the incidence of terrorist violence was related to various social, economic and political changes Italy was experiencing as the events unfolded. In understanding political terrorism in Italy, it is of some importance to determine not only the terrorists' backgrounds but also those of their principal victims. The residuals for the northern regions of Piedmont, the Aosta Valley, Lombardy and Trentino-Alto Adige were more widely dispersed than those of all the other regions north of Rome. The pattern for southern Italy, including Sicily and Sardinia, also appeared distinct. Furthermore, the residuals for Rome (Lazio) were unlike those for the rest of the country.
