ABSTRACT

Daily life begins early in Lin Village. Long before the first ray of sun lightens the distant coastline five kilometers to the east at around five o’clock on a summer morning, an observer can feel the stir of life in the still dark houses. Women are generally the first in the family to arise. Quietly dressing and washing herself with water from well water stored in large ceramic jars in the open courtyard, the housewife dashes to the kitchen to heat up for breakfast leftover rice gruel and dishes from the night before.
