ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the place of Syria in Israeli thinking at each stage of it, the nature of the Syrian military response, and the results of the operation from the Syrian point of view. With regard to Israeli-Syrian interactions, the Peace for Galilee operation falls into two main stages. The first stage, which occurred from June 6 to 11, involved the drawing of the Syrian army in Lebanon into a direct military confrontation with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The second stage, which occurred from June 11 to September 1, involved limited military pressures on the Syrian army. On June 7, the Syrians ambushed IDF forces advancing on Jezzine in the Jbaa area, and on June 8 they dispatched a tank battalion from the Bekaa for a counterattack on Jezzine. An Israeli armored force was dispatched to Jezzine, encountered Syrian resistance, and began a battle to capture the town which lasted until the evening.
