ABSTRACT

The economic development of Taiwan in the past three decades was quite satisfactory, as rapid growth was accompanied by stable prices, achievement of full employment, and speedy industrialization. Studies on economic development in Taiwan are rather numerous. However, very few studies have been done on tertiary industry, which comprises about a half of the GNP. In order to shed some light on this under-explained area, this chapter attempts to analyze the structural change and technology of tertiary industry in Taiwan for the period 1952–81.
