ABSTRACT

At the core of this book was the notion that arts-literacies matter and are necessary in order for students of today and tomorrow to be able to communicate effectively across a variety of social and cultural contexts. Arts participation in schools is critical for developing and educating the whole individual. It is also important for students to be able to work with and create art with others. Concerning vignettes, shared in Chapter 1, have dominated personal accounts and research exploring the relationship between the arts and literacy. This book has aimed to share productive and positive classroom pictures of vital arts-literacies in action. Education perspectives of reading and writing in language mode alone place pressures on teacher practice. This book has argued for a recognition of the already existing and thriving arts-literacies in many classrooms. This chapter, therefore, presents a number of recommendations to support arts-literacies in schools so that students have access to important and critical skills that support opportunities for positive pathways after school.
