ABSTRACT

Throughout this book, it is argued that the social and cultural contexts and backgrounds in which students engage in arts learning, are to be valued and acknowledged. In addition, it has been highlighted how participation in the arts provides many benefits to students. Chapter 6 shares specific examples of how the arts can support diverse learners in literacy. Indeed, the arts have been proven to improve the learning outcomes of students from non-dominant communities. It is argued that without access to quality arts education, these students become more marginalised. The chapter presents a range of strategies that can effectively embrace cultural diversity in the classroom through arts practice.
