ABSTRACT

The multidimensional theme of religious identity is discussed in this chapter. It is argued that that a global sharing of advanced scientific technology has made it poignantly visible that religions continue to remain a potent force in shaping our civilizational goals. Societies across cultures are now steadily assuming a multireligious character. This presence of a plurality of religious identities has significant sociopolitical implications. Under these circumstances, authentic meeting of the religions of the world is urgently needed. This chapter focuses on a number of issues related to the uses and abuses of religious identity and highly recommends a collaboration among the spokespersons of various religious traditions, also for the sake of a discernment of common values.
