ABSTRACT

The dominant narrative over recent years has been the influence of neoliberal ideology over society and economic affairs. The chapter provides a critique of this perspective. In finding neoliberalism’s influence to be everywhere, critics elevate the pursuit of market values to a prominence that is not deserved. From their perspective, it would seem that the market dominates the political sphere when in fact it is the reverse. State intervention in western societies has been essential over recent decades not only in creating quasi-markets, but in conserving capital itself.
