ABSTRACT
In this chapter, it is argued that the fall in the share of public sector employment in the UK and more modestly in the USA (until recent years) merely obscures the state’s continuing and extensive role in the domestic labour market. Paradoxically, the relative decline has been matched by an increase in private sector provision of services to the state, giving a significant impetus to what is described as state-dependent employment.
