ABSTRACT

Larger ensembles of brass and wind can approach the size of a chamber orchestra, but the characteristics of the blended sound are different from one another and can require more detail from individual parts to come alive. The difference in recording approach from a string-based orchestra is discussed in the context of wind ensembles and classical brass ensemble, and techniques are offered for each. The different instrumentation of the traditional brass band is outlined, and the parallels between this ensemble and the blended tone of strings are noted. Percussion ensembles are briefly discussed.
