ABSTRACT

Mixing is an integral part of the recording session in classical workflow, although remixing is also common. Classical mixing is primarily concerned with balancing a number of microphone sources which all contain varying degrees of spill. This chapter looks at creating a good static balance in a number of common scenarios, and suggests which microphones to balance first and the order in which to add the others. Appropriate use of EQ is discussed, along with the use of high-pass filtering as a common classical technique. The merits of natural and artificial reverb are considered, and advice is given on blending both to enhance a recording. Consideration is given to management of the large dynamic range of classical music by appropriate manual compression.
