ABSTRACT

Achieving a recorded piano sound that feels natural, clear, and tonally balanced across the whole range whilst being really enjoyable to listen to is a difficult challenge. The instrument itself is discussed in some detail, including the layout of the concert grand piano and effects of the lid. The aim of a classical recording in setting the instrument into a space without losing detail is explained. Approaches to recording using spaced pairs as well as the specific Decca method are outlined, along with other techniques for compromised situations such as upright pianos, half-stick lids, and restricted microphone placement.
